NGC 4565 (also known as the Needle Galaxy or Caldwell 38) is an edge-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices. It was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel on 6 April 1785. Regarding the labeling: The designation “H. V. 24” refers to the 24th entry in Class V (Very Large Nebulae) of the catalog created by the astronomer William Herschel.
